Maidstone United’s walking football programme on a Friday evening provides the opportunity for men over 50 to play football. As part of the Stones Community Trust, this provides exercise in a group setting which is good for physical and mental wellbeing.
Walking football has become extremely popular and is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe, especially for men. The game is played at a slower pace than traditional football, with a primary emphasis on the lower body, thus providing a low-impact exercise opportunity. The sport is aimed at older people who want to get involved in the sport again, it is fun, friendly and is great exercise.
The one area the Stones Community Trust want to develop further is the social aspect providing additional opportunities to sit down and chat.
Depression in middle aged men which sometimes leads to suicide is well recognised, as is the benefit of social interaction. In recognition of this and to support all our mental health the walking team are introducing their own initiative ‘Two Pint Tuesday’ where between 19:00 and 22:00 hrs on the first Tuesday of every month they meet for a pint, a chat and some banter.
Anyone is welcome. There is no commitment to turn up every month, if you have a spare hour and fancy a beer and a chat just turn up.
Think of it as Biker Grove for the over 50s!
The first one will be Tuesday 05 September The Brenchley Maidstone.
