The first meeting took place on Thursday, May 18, featuring teams from Devon and one from Somerset. Fixtures will occur at Culm Valley Sports Centre throughout the summer months ahead of a new FA League in September.
From Exeter Ladies, Gillian Burgess played a pivotal role in establishing the league. Reflecting on its inception, she said: “We started 18 months ago with women’s walking football in Devon, and we’ve listened to what women want and put it into practice to allow them to get involved. Loads of other clubs out here have put on mini-tournaments and friendly games, so our next step up is the league.”
The Women’s Walking Football League in Devon is the first of its kind, with teams cropping up and friendly tournaments becoming regular events. The league marks a significant milestone. Furthermore, Devon will host two consecutive leagues within a year, with the Devon FA League commencing in September. Gillian said: “Devon is the first to have two separate consecutive leagues in a year, and it’s awesome.”
