Workington St Joseph’s Ladies have been crowned regional winners in the FA Walking Football Cup.

It comes a week after finishing runners-up in the Cumberland FA Walking Football League Cup.

The squad had travelled to Sunderland for the second annual regional tournament, determined to go one step further after narrowly missing out on the title last year.

Their hard work in training and competitions throughout the year paid off, with the team showing organisation, determination, and togetherness on the pitch.

In a tense final against Newcastle Swifts, St Joseph’s Ladies held firm, displaying both grit and skill to secure a 2-0 victory.

The win not only earned them the regional crown but also a place at the national finals at St George’s Park on Sunday November 2.

Cumberland FA football development officer, Ray Sempill, said: “Well done to St Joseph’s Ladies on a brilliant result.

“It’s great to see your efforts come together on the pitch, and you fully deserved that win. Best of luck at the nationals – everyone at Cumberland FA is behind you!”

The club shared their pride after the match, thanking their supporters and recognising the Player of the Match, Kelly Surtees, for her outstanding performance.

They also paid tribute to coach Martyn Marshall, who has supported the team’s journey every step of the way.

Captain Kate Smith, an England international, said: “What an incredible afternoon. After losing out in the final last year by one goal, our squad had spent the year at training and in competitions working hard on our football skills, improving our game play and bonding as a team on the pitch.

“This year we were more structured and more organised and more determined not to let the opportunity to play in the national stages pass us by again!

“I am so proud of the ladies and proud of our achievements on Sunday and over the last year. We now look forward to the nationals at St George’s Park on Sunday November 2.”
