Portishead-based club expands rapidly as people with Parkinson’s embrace inclusive sport with proven health benefits

A walking football initiative for people with Parkinson’s has flourished in just a few months, drawing growing numbers of players to weekly sessions — and inspiring plans for a regional tournament.

Started by Portishead Town FC in May, the group has grown from a handful of participants to more than fourteen regulars, with up to twenty attending training and matches each week at the club’s ground.

With backing from the Walking Football Association and support from local Parkinson’s groups, the inclusive project is aiming to raise awareness of the physical and mental health benefits of staying active with Parkinson’s.

Walking football — a slower-paced, low-impact version of the game — is gaining traction among people with Parkinson’s due to its wide-ranging health benefits. These include improved balance and coordination, reduced risk of falls, better cardiovascular fitness, enhanced sleep and energy levels, and increased social interaction and wellbeing.

The club is hoping to welcome more participants from across the South West who want to stay active in a supportive and enjoyable environment.
