Norwich win the FA Cup! Walking footballers crowned national champions

Norwich Soca Seniors’ Over 50s have been crowned national champions after winning the FA’s Walking Football Cup.

The team beat a very good Solihull 1-0 in the final at St George’s Park in Burton.

The road to St George’s started in September as the team beat Norwich CSF and Pacemakers to progress to the next round.

The regional round took place at Dagenham in mid-October where the guys played four games to reach the final where we beat Colchester on penalties to reach the national finals.

It was the second time the over 50s have reached the finals.

A total of 18 teams took part in three age groups: women’s over 40s, men’s over 50s, and over 60s, with the finalists coming from 15 county FAs.

The opposition on Sunday came from Solihull Moors, Oxford, Torquay, Garstang, and Newcastle.

They played five games winning two, drawing two, and losing one which saw the team through to the final against Solihull Moors who they drew 0-0 with in the first game earlier in the day.

NSS saved their best performance for the final game and ran out deserved winners 1-0 with a goal from Matt Middelton after a shot from captain Dean Parfitt.

Chairman Neville Townsend said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our club, and I am particularly pleased not only for the whole squad but the player/manager John Rogers who has devoted many hours into managing the 50s team and all his hard work has been rewarded with winning the FA Walking Football National title.

“As chairman it was a very proud moment to be there to witness the guys lift the trophy well done guys onwards and upwards.

“18 of the squad are off to Tenerife to play in a 2-day tournament which we are all looking forward to as are the 10 wives who are coming with us.”

Norwich Soca Seniors squad: Barry Gray GK, David Upton, Clive Walker, Darrin Pike, John Rogers, Dean Parfitt, Matt Middleton, Gavin Jones and Dan Giacomelli.

Norwich Soca Seniors has 160 members and plays four times a week at the FDC at Bowthorpe with over 140 players taking part during the week.
